DC Lactation Consultants supporting new mom breastfeeding

Lactation Consultants

Postpartum doulas have basic training in lactation and body-feeding; some have additional qualifications, such as Certified Lactation Counselors or Breastfeeding Specialists. While postpartum doulas have experience and training in common challenges, we often work with clinical providers to address more complex issues.

If you need care beyond our scope of practice, your postpartum doula will refer you to a Lactation Consultant or IBCLC. If you prefer to find someone yourself, here are some options to help you get started.

Support Groups for New Parents

The early weeks and months - and even years - after birth can feel easier with a community of peers. Peers are other parents, often with children similar in age or with similar birth stories or outcomes, that connect to share experiences and support. Being part of a peer group can help parents feel less alone and anxious as they recover and adjust to their new "normal."

There is tremendous diversity in the types of peer groups - some are online, others are in-person; some are facilitated, others are more informal; some are location based, others focus on particular needs. It is important that you find the right peer group for you. Here is a list to help you get started.
