About
Ayesha is a certified postpartum doula and lactation counselor. Her journey in postpartum care started unexpectedly, in 2009, while supporting her sister through birth and after. Emerging from this intense time (when she says, poop literally and figuratively hit the fan), she made the decision to certify professionally on the Amtrak ride home. Since then, Ayesha’s philosophy to doula-ing has drawn deeply from her work, over nearly fifteen years, in sexual and reproductive health and her commitment to reproductive and social justice for all women, in all their choices. As an immigrant mother and a survivor of life-threatening perinatal complications, she feels especially invested in parents of color and those coping with birth-related trauma, whose stories are often unheard or untold. She is also an associate editor for the International Doula, DONA’s quarterly print publication, and a contributor to the Metropolitan Doulas blog. Ayesha immigrated to the U.S. in 2005, moving to Boston where she worked with Our Bodies Ourselves (yes, the folks behind the book!) for 12 years. She currently lives in Bethesda with her partner, Erik, their first-grader, Tara and Peter Cat, their large, lazy and loveable feline.
